The experimental project organized by DIGIEC ( Department of Law and Economics) of the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria foresees the employment of two disabled members of staff. Here are their bios:
Dr. Avv. Angelo D. Marra (Coordinator )
Angelo D. Marra was born on August 19, 1980 in Reggio Calabria (Italy). He is a PhD in Civil Law and a lawyer. He graduated in Law from the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria in 2003 with a first-class honours degree, defending a thesis dealing with Private Law, entitled “The Digital Signature and the Electronic Document: a First Attempt to Harmonize the Rules”. The thesis was recommended for publication. In 2007 he attained the title of PhD in Civil Law at the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria with a thesis focusing on support for physically impaired persons in their daily living function. Later he joined a research training programme funded by the Regional Government of Calabria. In 2010 he attended the courses in “Disability Rights and Law” and “Discrimination Law” envisaged by the Postgraduate Disability Studies MA and Human Rights MA at the University of Leeds (UK).
Since 2004 he has been subject expert in Private Law and biolaw at the Law School of the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria.
2004 – is scientific co-worker at the chair of Family Law (Law School of the “Mediterranea” University) and of Accessibility, Usability, and Safety of Spaces (no more existing) at the School of Architecture of the same University.
2006 – is visiting research fellow (three months) at the Centre for Disability Studies and the Department of Law of the University of Leeds (UK).
2009-2010 – conducts Comparative Law post-doctoral research (12 months) on anti-discrimination legislation in Italy and in the United Kingdom at the School of Law of the University of Leeds (UK).
July 2012 – April 2013 – is Researcher for the DYS Project “Disability Studies and Protection of Individuals “ (University of Catanzaro, Italy) within which he produces several publications and organizes an international conference on Disability Studies hosted by the University of Catanzaro.
December 2013- May 2015 – is Research Fellow at the University of Catanzaro and works on the project “Reasonableness as a Decision-making Criterion in Bioethics Controversial Issues”. He is Associate Researcher for the University of York (UK) under the same project.
He taught :
Civil Law at the Specialisation School for Legal Professions of the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria;
in the 2nd-level Postgraduate Degree Programme at the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria (Refresher Postgraduate Degree in Public Administration Telematics, GREL and MEL Postgraduate Degree Programme);
in the Postgraduate Degree Programme on Disability Studies (in English) at the University of Malta;
Internet Law and E-commerce at Messina University (Italy);
in the Postgraduate Degree Programme in Public Administration Private Law at the University of Catanzaro;
in several training courses on human rights, disability and non-discrimination for Milan Bar Association (Italy) and Reggio Calabria Medical Council (Italy).
SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
He is committed to the dissemination of research findings regarding disability (“Disability Studies”) all over Italy: his studies focus on the right to social inclusion of persons with disabilities and the protection against discrimination.
He has refereed some of Lancet articles focusing on his research interests.
He has given talks, also in English, at national and international conferences at Philadelphia “Temple University” (USA), at New York City University (USA), at Saskatoon University in Canada, at the University of Leeds (UK), at Ca’Foscari University in Venice (Italy), and at the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria (Italy).
Scientific committee memberships
He is member of the editorial board of the journal Intersticios. Revista Sociológica de Pensamiento Crítico of Universidad de Murcia (Spain) (www.intersticios.es) and of the journal Rivista Italiana di Studi sulla Disabilità. He is correspondent for CRID (Interdepartmental Research Centre on Discrimination and Vulnerability) of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy).
He is the author of more than 50 publications in Italian and English.
He wrote the definition of the entry “Disabilità” (Disability) in the Digesto delle Discipline Privatistiche published by UTET, and the definition of the entry “Barriere architettoniche” (Architectural barriers) in the Annali dell’Enciclopedia del diritto (Giuffrè Publisher, “I tipi” series).
He wrote the book “Diritto e Disability Studies: materiali per una nuova ricerca multidisciplinare” published by Falzea, Reggio Calabria (Italy).
He is editor of the series Disabilità&Diritto, Key Publisher (Scientific Director : Prof. P. Cendon) including his own publication entitled “ I fondi strutturali europei, la disabilità e le politiche regionali.”

Dr. Arch. Antonino Labate
Antonino Labate was born in Reggio Calabria, where he lives, on January 8, 1980.
In 1998 he obtained a scientific high school diploma and enrolled in the degree programme in Regional, Urban, and Environmental Planning at the “Mediterranea” University of Reggio Calabria (Italy).
In 2005 he got a 1st-level degree with the final result of 110/110 with honours, defending a thesis on natural risk monitoring in Reggio Calabria (“Monitoraggio dei rischi naturali a Reggio Calabria: il rione Sbarre”).
Later, in July 2008, he got a 2nd-level degree with the final result of 110/110 with honours defending a thesis on renewable energies in Reggio Calabria (“Contributo energetico delle fonti rinnovabili all’interno del territorio comunale di Reggio Calabria”.
In November 2008 he passed the examination to establish his suitability to practice as Planner and in July 2009 he joined the Association of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, and Conservationists of Reggio Calabria Province (see “Sez. A, sett. B, n. 2470”).
In 2010 he passed the admission test to the course for experts in redevelopment and upgrading of anthropic parks in the province of Reggio Calabria, whose main aim was the promotion of little known areas of Reggio Calabria province. The attendance of the course and the final exam success earned him the related qualification.
In December 2011 he was admitted to the PhD course in Architecture (“Regional Planning”, 27th cycle), benefiting from a scholarship. On March 26, 2015 he achieved the qualification of PhD, defending a thesis entitled “Natural Risks and Urban Planning – Analises and Proposals for a Better Territorial Governance”.
He has always been fond of his Calabrian homeland and very interested in the defence of its natural environment, especially as far as the relevant technological aspects are concerned. He attends several specialization courses on alternative energies and energy management.
He has cooperated with ARISE association (Progetti, Cooperativa a R.L.) for several years, looking after energy certificates and drawing up reports as well as documents for PAES (Action Plans for Sustainable Energy) under the Covenant of Mayors Initiative.
Having realized, very late actually, he cannot fully enjoy his own rights as a disabled person and he is faced with a lot of mobility obstacles, he has discovered a new interest in disability issues, especially in the rights of the disabled. By the way he has given talks at some events such as:
“Barriere architettoniche: una città per tutti”;
Incontro per la Giornata Mondiale dei diritti delle persone con disabilità 2015.
